About Eiger

The Eiger's Mittellegi climb starts at a high alpine hut. Reaching that hut and descending from the summit need separate plans.

Route questions, answered

Specific planning questions, with the scope of each source kept visible.

Is the Eiger south-ridge descent entirely downhill?

No. The SAC’s separate descent listing includes 360 metres of climbing as well as descent, with an estimated 4–5 hours. Treat it as an alpine itinerary with uphill sections, rather than assuming a quick downhill return.

SAC · Eiger route overview and archive

Do the north-face archive entries confirm current protection or conditions?

No. The catalogue distinguishes historical guidebook records from current route listings. An archived line documents a route and its attributed grade, but does not verify today’s fixed gear, ice, rockfall or access. Those details remain open for the archived north-face lines.

SAC · Eiger route overview and archive

Do the Mittellegi ridge's 4–5 hours include reaching the hut?

No. The SAC lists the ridge ascent separately from the 1½–2½-hour Eismeer-to-hut approach. Descent is additional.

SAC · Mittellegihütte approach and summit route

Is the Eismeer hut approach an ordinary hiking connection?

No. It is listed under alpinism with SAC grade ZS; the train journey does not remove the alpine approach.

Research still needed

For Eiger, this atlas does not yet document first-ascent history. Missing first-ascent evidence does not mean a mountain is unclimbed.

Use the linked sources as starting points; summit coordinates do not describe a climbing route or public access.
