About Wildspitze

A glacier mountain above Vent and the Pitztal, in the Weißkamm of the Ötztal Alps. It has a rocky south summit and a snow-covered north summit. The atlas retains the 3,768 m catalogue value; the hut and guide operator use 3,770 m, so linked sources do not all agree on the quoted height.

Route questions, answered

Specific planning questions, with the scope of each source kept visible.

Is the Wildspitze’s 7–8 hours an ascent-only estimate?

No. AlpinsportCenter states that this walking time includes descent for its Breslauerhütte programme. The hut approach and overnight programme are separate. Do not compare it directly with an ascent-only estimate from a different hut.

AlpinsportCenter · Breslauerhütte glacier programme

Do the Breslauerhütte and Vernagthütte routes use the same glacier approach?

They are listed as separate itineraries: Mitterkarjoch from Breslauerhütte, and Vernagtferner–Brochkogeljoch from Vernagthütte. The Vent programme also describes a descent towards Breslauerhütte. Select the specific hut, approach and return rather than combining their time figures.

What experience does the guided Wildspitze ascent require?

AlpinsportCenter specifies several years of hiking experience, sure-footedness, good fitness and prior crampon experience for its Breslauerhütte programme. It recommends acclimatisation. The route includes glacier travel and scrambling; an operator offering a guided trip does not establish suitability for an independent first alpine climb.

AlpinsportCenter · Breslauerhütte glacier programme

How many days should I distinguish from the Wildspitze summit time?

The cited operator advertises a 1.5-day programme, while its 7–8-hour walking estimate includes the summit outing and descent. These figures describe different parts of the trip. The provider may use a Rofenkarferner variant depending on conditions, so confirm the hut approach, chosen line and return in the actual itinerary.

Planning at a glance

Access and starting point

The guide programme uses Breslauerhütte, the Mitterkar protected section and Taschachferner. It describes the Rofenkar descent as an option only in good conditions, rather than a default return route.

Difficulty and required experience

The programme includes glacier travel, crampon and rope-team training before the summit ascent. No independently verified numeric overall grade is supplied here.

Season and restrictions

Ötztal Tourism lists Breslauerhütte opening from 19 June to 20 September for 2026. This is a dated hut listing, not a recurring annual guarantee or a summit-condition report; confirm future dates directly.

First documented ascent

1848 · south summit

Leander Klotz from Rofen and an unnamed companion in the hut’s account.

Ötztal’s Venter Tage brochure records Leander Klotz’s first ascent of the south summit in 1848. The Breslauerhütte account adds an unnamed farmer and distinguishes the north summit’s later ascent in 1861. The year displayed here refers to the south summit.

Earlier local or Indigenous ascents may not be represented in the cited record.

Planning and access

Vent is the valley base for the Breslauerhütte approach. The hut stands at 2,844 m and publishes reservation and contact information. Check opening dates directly and discuss the summit plan with local guides. Ötztal’s Rofenkarferner training tour is a separate glacier outing; completing it is not a summit ascent.

Terrain and hazards

Glacier travel, the protected Mitterkar section and upper summit terrain require more than ordinary hiking experience. The linked guide programme teaches crampon use, rope-team travel and crevasse rescue before its summit day. Do not treat the condition-dependent Rofenkar variation as universally available.
