About Grossglockner

Austria's highest mountain stands on the border between Carinthia and East Tyrol in the Hohe Tauern. Its compact summit pyramid is reached through glacier terrain and exposed ridges, rather than by an ordinary hiking trail. Kals and Heiligenblut offer different approaches that meet near the Adlersruhe.

Route questions, answered

Specific planning questions, with the scope of each source kept visible.

Does a Grossglockner rating of 3/5 mean UIAA grade III?

No. The 3/5 and 4/5 figures come from the Bergführer Kals operator comparison. They are its own ratings out of five, not UIAA climbing grades or a converted alpine grade. Use them only within that comparison.

Bergführer Kals · guided routes comparison

Is Stüdlhütte the starting point for the comparison’s normal route?

The operator table gives Lucknerhaus as the starting point for both normal-route programmes named after Stüdlhütte and Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte. The programme name therefore identifies a hut option, not the table’s trailhead. Confirm overnight stops and the time breakdown with the provider.

Planning at a glance

Access and starting point

The Kalser guides list Lucknerhaus as the starting point for their normal-route and Stüdlgrat itineraries, with different overnight bases. Choose the hut together with the route.

Bergführer Kals · route comparison

Difficulty and required experience

The operator rates its normal-route programme 3/5 and Stüdlgrat 4/5. These are its own programme ratings, not UIAA rock grades or a universal alpine grading scale.

Season and restrictions

The Kalser programme lists June–September for the normal route with Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte overnighting, and June–October for Stüdlhütte and Stüdlgrat programmes. These are advertised programme seasons, not verified day-by-day route availability.

First documented ascent

28 July 1800

Five climbers from the expedition supported by Prince-Bishop Franz Xaver von Salm. The linked historical account does not identify every summit participant.

The party reached the summit via the Adlersruhe. The Salmhütte provided a base for the expedition. This account distinguishes the expedition's patron from the climbers who reached the summit.

Earlier local or Indigenous ascents may not be represented in the cited record.

Planning and access

Decide on an approach before booking accommodation. From Kals, the Lucknerhaus is the approach starting point used by the Kalser guides. The Stüdlhütte (2,801 m) is a lower overnight base; the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte is the upper base at the Adlersruhe. The eastern approach uses the Salmhütte. The Alpenverein hut directory provides Stüdlhütte contact and reservation information. Confirm opening dates, access and reservations directly with each operator. A sightseeing visit to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road does not provide summit access.

Terrain and hazards

Glacier crossings and exposed rock ridges make this an alpine climb. Ask local guides about current snow and ice, glacier travel, rockfall and congestion on the summit section. Plan equipment, rope skills and turnaround decisions for the chosen route. This profile supplies no current conditions or fixed timetable.
