About Bugaboo Spire

Bugaboo Spire is a granite climbing peak in Bugaboo Park, British Columbia. BC Parks labels it 3,176 m on its park map; the imported atlas record above lists 3,204 m. That discrepancy is unresolved. Height alone does not describe the glacier approach, technical climbing or descent.

These figures concern the hut approach, not a Bugaboo Spire ascent. ACC reports damaged trail sections and difficult crossings.

Route questions, answered

Specific planning questions, with the scope of each source kept visible.

Why does the Kain route have different published ratings?

Summit Mountain Guides lists III/5.6 in its route table but AD/5.8 in its overview. These combine different grading systems and also disagree on the rock grade. We preserve the discrepancy; the catalogue does not select a definitive grade or silently convert it.

Summit Mountain Guides · Bugaboo Alpine Rock

Does the Conrad Kain Hut approach time include Bugaboo Spire?

No. ACC and BC Parks publish hut-approach estimates, not a summit-climb duration. Their estimates also differ. Add the selected climb and descent separately, and check the current park or hut notice before relying on a published approach time.

Mountain facts and common questions

How high is Bugaboo Spire?

BC Parks’ park map gives 3,176 m. Our imported geographic record lists 3,204 m, so the figures disagree. Use the attributed park-map figure for this answer; a survey-based reconciliation of the catalogue remains open.

BC Parks · Bugaboo Park map

Is the Kain route a hiking route?

No. Los Alamos describes technical climbing with substantial glacier travel. The Kain route is the easier alternative in that reference and also the descent from the Northeast ridge; easier does not mean a walking trail.

Los Alamos Mountaineers · Bugaboo Northeast Ridge

Which part of the Northeast ridge should I compare?

Compare approach, rock climbing and descent separately. The Los Alamos reference lists IV / 5.7 and stresses route finding and efficient climbing. A checked climbing time and elevation gain remain open.

Los Alamos Mountaineers · Bugaboo Northeast Ridge

How far is the Conrad Kain Hut approach?

ACC lists a 4.6 km approach taking about 3–4 hours. Its feature table gives 700 m of ascent, while the access description says 720 m. These are hut-approach figures; they exclude the Bugaboo Spire climb and descent. Flood damage can make the published estimates unreliable.

Alpine Club of Canada · Conrad Kain Hut

Can I rely on the usual hut approach for a 2026 trip?

The ACC page still carries a 14 July 2026 warning about damaged crossings after the 2025 flood. It describes possible fording and says operations may be adjusted or suspended. This source check does not confirm that the crossings have been repaired or that the hut is operating on your travel date.

Alpine Club of Canada · Conrad Kain Hut

Kain route or Northeast ridge?

Compare the rock climbing, glaciated approach and return route separately. Missing climbing times and elevation gains remain open.

Planning at a glance

Access and starting point

The usual hut approach begins at the Bugaboo Park public trailhead. ACC lists 4.6 km and 3–4 hours to Conrad Kain Hut, not to the summit. Its notice dated 14 July 2026, still published when checked on 7 October, reports flood-damaged crossings and warns that hut operations may be suspended if access cannot be managed safely. Check the operator before travelling.

Alpine Club of Canada · Conrad Kain Hut · BC Parks · Bugaboo Park

Difficulty and required experience

Summit Mountain Guides lists Kain as III / 5.6 in its difficulty table but AD / 5.8 elsewhere on the same page. Northeast is IV / 5.8 there; Los Alamos lists IV / 5.7. These published differences are unresolved. Glacier travel and a complex descent add demands beyond the rock rating.

Summit Mountain Guides · Bugaboo Alpine Rock · Los Alamos Mountaineers · Bugaboo Northeast Ridge

Season and restrictions

ACC describes a summer-only hut. BC Parks warns that summer storms can still bring lightning and snow; glacier conditions and hut dates need separate checks.

Research still needed

For Bugaboo Spire, this atlas does not yet document first-ascent history. Missing first-ascent evidence does not mean a mountain is unclimbed.

Use the linked sources as starting points; summit coordinates do not describe a climbing route or public access.
